Various Functional Ceramics

This detergent-free laundry ball is filled with a blend of engineered ceramic beads, each type carrying a distinct role — conditioning the water, raising its alkalinity, and keeping the drum fresh. Four of the principal types are shown below.

Every ceramic in the blend is formed from mineral-rich clays and sealed inside the ball's core. Working together, they reproduce much of the chemistry a detergent would normally provide — raising the water's pH and helping release dirt — so everyday loads can be washed with little or no detergent.

How it is made

Inside the TEM Ceramic

Six Months of Fermentation, Then 1,400 °C

TEM stands for Total Effective Microorganism. Here is what that actually means, why the clay sits for half a year before anything is shaped, and what is still in the bead once the kiln has done its work.

    Ferment — six months, minimum

    High-purity clay is blended with the microbial culture and then left alone for at least six months. There is no way to hurry this part: the culture needs that long to work through the clay, break down what it can and leave the minerals from its own biomass behind.

  2. 02

    Form — shaped into beads

    The fermented clay is rolled into small beads and dried. Bead form is deliberate: it gives the same volume of ceramic far more surface to meet the water with than a solid block would.

  3. 03

    Fire — 800 to 1,400 °C

    In the kiln the clay hardens into a crystalline ceramic, and the minerals left behind by six months of fermentation are locked into that structure for good. The organic matter burns off as it goes, leaving the voids it occupied behind — so what comes out is a hard, porous bead with the mineral content built into its own lattice.

Four things make this clay different

Not every clay can do this job. Ours is selected and prepared for four reasons, and the last one is what holds the other three together.

A micro-porous body

Countless tiny openings run through every bead. That is where the water actually meets the ceramic — and why a small handful of beads can act on a full drum of wash water.

A rare mineral makeup

The clay is chosen for what is in it. Calcium, magnesium and potassium sit in the fired body and pass slowly into the water, cycle after cycle.

Far-infrared emission

Once fired, the ceramic gives off far-infrared energy — measured and certified by an independent Korean testing institute. The report is further down this page.

Six months with TEM culture

The clay is blended with TEM culture and left for at least half a year before a single bead is shaped. This is the step that makes the effect hold up over years of washing.

Take the fourth away and the first three fade. The long fermentation is what fixes the minerals into the clay and opens the pores that carry them out — which is why we wait six months instead of six weeks.

That is the range a laundry detergent works in, and it is why grease and protein stains let go — alkaline water breaks down oils and loosens protein soil. BioWashBall reaches the same range with minerals instead of surfactants. Nothing foams, nothing needs rinsing out, and nothing heads down the drain after the cycle ends.

The mould stays the same whichever colour you order — the colour comes from the pellets that go into it. Switching means purging the machine and running your colour as its own batch, so a custom colour is a question of batch size rather than tooling. Our private-label and OEM programme starts at 50,000 pieces, with the housing run in a colour of your choosing and matched to the reference you send us.

Below that, our standard green ships from stock in whatever quantity suits you. There is no tooling charge either way — the mould is already ours.

Soil Release Study

Testing was carried out by independent institutes including KATRI (Korea Apparel Testing & Research Institute), KTR (Korea Testing & Research Institute) and Specialized Technology Resources, Inc. (USA).
Several reports were issued under earlier model names such as RolyPoly and Bio Globe. The TEM ceramic core tested in those reports is unchanged in the current Washball Plus — only the outer housing has been revised. Full-resolution certificates and additional documentation are available to wholesale partners on request.
