What is a hydrogen water bottle?
A hydrogen water bottle is a portable device that adds molecular hydrogen (H2) to water using electrolysis. Electrolysis is a simple electric process that splits water into hydrogen and oxygen. Nothing else is added to the water.

How does PEM electrolysis work?
Good models use PEM (proton exchange membrane) electrolysis, also called SPE (solid polymer electrolyte). It is the same basic technology used in hydrogen fuel cells.
Why the membrane matters
Without a membrane, gases from both electrodes can mix into the same water. That includes oxygen and other by-products formed at the positive electrode. A PEM design keeps them apart, so your water gets the hydrogen and the rest is vented. Always check that a bottle states a PEM or SPE design.

Why does molecular hydrogen matter?
Scientific interest began with a 2007 paper in Nature Medicine. In cell cultures and rat models, hydrogen selectively reduced the hydroxyl radical, one of the most reactive oxygen species (Ohsawa et al., 2007). These were lab and animal findings, not human results.
A 2022 review went further. It concluded that dissolved hydrogen, not alkalinity or other water properties, is the agent behind effects reported for electrolyzed water (LeBaron et al., 2022). That is why output in ppb matters so much.
Study box: a human trial
Sim et al., 2020, Scientific Reports. A randomized, double-blind, controlled trial in 38 healthy adults aged 20 to 59. One group drank hydrogen water at about 0.753 mg/L for 4 weeks. The other drank plain water.
The hydrogen group showed less apoptosis (programmed cell death) in blood immune cells and lower inflammation-related signaling (Sim et al., 2020).
